TOP MANAGEMENT TEAM CHARACTERISTICS IN THE GOVERNANCE OF LARGE MANUFACTURING FIRMS

ABSTRACT

The study examines the influence of top management team characteristics on performance. The study is guided by the upper echelons and organizational performance theories respectively. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The population was all seventy-two large manufacturing firms in Kenya. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaire from Chief Executive Officers. This was analyzed through descriptive and multiple regression analysis. Results obtained show that top management team characteristics account for 16.8% of the performance of the firm. It also accounts for 10.8%, 7.8%, 12.7%, and 11% of financial performance, customer perspective, internal business processes, and learning and growth respectively.
